Medical University of Lublin Marks 75 Years of Medical Education and 30 Years of the North American Track

The University celebrates two significant milestones, recognizing its history of medical education in Poland and three decades of preparing students from the United States and Canada for careers in medicine.

In 2025, the Medical University of Lublin celebrated its 75th anniversary, marking more than seven decades of medical education, research, and clinical training in Poland. The year also marked the 30th anniversary of the University’s North American Track, a program that has connected medical education in Lublin with clinical training and professional opportunities in the United States since 1995.

Established in 1950, the Medical University of Lublin has educated generations of physicians and healthcare professionals. As the University expanded its academic programs and international relationships, it began welcoming medical students from the United States in 1995. The initiative eventually developed into what is now known as the North American Track, attracting students from both the United States and Canada.

Over the past three decades, the program has become an established part of the University’s international medical education offerings. Its development has been shaped by the academic requirements of students planning to return to North America for postgraduate medical training and, ultimately, medical practice.

A Strong Foundation in U.S. Clinical Medical Education

One of the distinguishing features of the North American Track is its clinical training program in the United States. Students begin their medical education in Lublin, where they study the foundational medical sciences, before progressing to clinical rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States.

The University’s relationships with American hospitals have been central to the development of the program. Through these affiliations, students gain clinical experience in specialties including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, and other areas of medicine.

Clinical rotations in the United States give students an opportunity to work with American physicians, participate in supervised patient care, and become familiar with the organization and expectations of the American healthcare system. For students intending to pursue residency training in the United States, this experience is an essential part of their medical education.

An important achievement in the history of the program has been its recognition by medical education regulatory authorities in the United States.

The Medical University of Lublin received approval from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in 1999 for long-term clinical clerkships, allowing eligible students to complete extended clinical rotations at hospitals in New York State. The University is also recognized by the Medical Board of California, an important consideration for international medical graduates planning to pursue postgraduate training and medical licensure in California.

These approvals have helped establish the University’s position among international medical schools offering clinical training opportunities in the United States. They also reflect the work undertaken over the years to maintain academic standards and meet the requirements of American medical education authorities.

Beyond clinical rotations, the University has continued to strengthen academic preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Students in the North American Track receive academic support as they prepare for these examinations and the residency application process.

Graduates of the Medical University of Lublin have gone on to complete residency training and establish medical careers in the United States and Canada. Many now practice in hospitals, medical centers, and communities across North America.

U.S. Federal Student Loans and Canadian Financial Assistance

Another important development for the University’s North American students has been access to government-supported student financing.

The Medical University of Lublin is approved by the United States Department of Education to participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program under Title IV. As an eligible foreign institution, the University can offer qualified American students access to U.S. federal student loans to help finance their medical education.

This approval has been particularly significant for American students who wish to pursue a medical degree abroad while maintaining access to federal educational financing. Eligible students can apply for federal loans to assist with tuition and other approved educational expenses, subject to applicable federal requirements.

Canadian students attending the University may also qualify for government student financial assistance through Canadian federal and provincial student loan programs, depending on their province of residence and individual eligibility.

The availability of these financing options has been an important consideration for students and families evaluating medical education outside their home countries.

Looking Back at 75 Years and Ahead to the Future

The University’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2025 brought attention to its history, academic accomplishments, and contributions to medical education. For the North American Track, the anniversary year was also an opportunity to recognize thirty years of relationships with students, graduates, hospitals, and physicians in the United States and Canada.

Since the first North American students arrived in Lublin in 1995, the program has experienced considerable growth and change. Medical education standards have evolved, clinical training requirements have become more demanding, and the process of entering postgraduate medical training in the United States has continued to develop.

Throughout these changes, the Medical University of Lublin has maintained its commitment to providing students with a comprehensive medical education that combines academic instruction in Poland with clinical experience in the United States.

The University’s North American operations, supported by MUL International, continue to coordinate clinical education, student services, and administrative matters related to the American and Canadian student population, working in cooperation with the University’s academic leadership in Lublin.

The anniversaries also provide an opportunity to acknowledge the many individuals who have contributed to the program over the past thirty years. University leaders, professors, clinical faculty, hospital administrators, and staff in Poland and the United States have all played a part in its development. Equally important are the graduates who have carried their medical education from Lublin into hospitals and medical practices throughout North America.

As the Medical University of Lublin enters its next chapter, the North American Track remains an important part of its international academic programs. With an established clinical training network in the United States, recognition from American medical education authorities, and access to student financing for eligible American and Canadian students, the University continues to provide a pathway for students seeking a medical career in North America.

The 75th anniversary of the Medical University of Lublin and the 30th anniversary of the North American Track are occasions to recognize how far the institution has come, the many physicians it has educated, and the relationships that have been built between Poland and North America over the past three decades.
